Tania Terpylak Scholarship Program

The Tania Terpylak Scholarship Program is a scholarship program of the Heartbeats Jump Rope Team, Inc. (recognized by IRS as a 501(c)(3) charitable organization) c/o 18399 Yorktown Oval, Strongsville, OH  44136  This scholarship program is intended to assist a graduating senior high school student who is active in the jump rope community to attend a post-secondary educational institution by providing a one-time, non-renewable $1,000 scholarship that will be awarded to a student entering college in the fall of 2023.

Tania Terpylak was a dedicated, enthusiastic, fun-loving and committed member of the Heartbeats Jump Rope Team for 10 years.  Her life was cut short in a tragic automobile accident that took her life on May 8, 2011.  She was 19 years old at the time and enrolled as a student at Akron University.  Throughout her 10 years as a member of the Heartbeats team, Tania participated in many jump rope competitions, including National and World Championships, many workshops and camps.  She was an accomplished athlete and passionate instructor, earning distinction as a National Champion in Double Dutch Freestyle and a Silver Medalist at World Jump Rope Competition.  Her vivacious personality was bright, bubbly and effervescent. She had a contagious laughter that could ease the tension of the most intense competition. Tania dreamed big, lived life to its utmost capacity and enjoyed an inseparable bond with her teammates and friends in the sport of jump rope. Her friendships throughout the world exemplified her vibrant joy of living. Words fall short of describing the magic that she brought to those around her.

Any current member of the jump rope community who will be graduating from high school in 2023 and is expecting to attend a college or university in the fall of 2023 may apply. To be eligible, an applicant must demonstrate leadership, academic excellence and sportsmanship.

A number of considerations will be reviewed by a selection committee. These will include:

  • Exemplary leadership and character as demonstrated through activities related to the sport of jump rope. Consideration will be given to students that have contributed both to their own team as well as the larger jump rope community.

  • Volunteer involvement in extra-curricular school and community activities outside of the sport of jump rope.

  • A written personal statement (maximum length of 500 words) that describes the applicant’s educational plans and career goals, as well as motivating factors and important experiences that have helped to shape his or her philosophy and life goals.

  • One personal recommendation (maximum of 300 words) that describe the applicant’s impact and commitment to the sport of jump rope and to the larger community outside jump rope.

  • This scholarship award will be made without regard to race, creed, color, religion, national origin, sexual orientation or sexual identification.

This is a non-renewable scholarship that will be issued to the collegiate entity upon official confirmation of course registration by the institution for 2023 academic year and must be applied to academic fees.

This scholarship can only be awarded if the school in which the recipient enrolls agrees not to reduce grant aid previously offered to that student, unless required by federal or state law. This award, however, may reduce the size of a work-study grant or student loan made by the institution.

A one-time award payment will be made directly to the post-secondary institution in the name of the scholarship recipient. Payments are to be applied to educational expenses for the student.

Award payment will be made as soon as 1) the recipient has signed and returned the Terms of Grant Agreement, 2) confirmation has been received from the institution of course enrollment, 3) the educational institution has verified that it will not reduce previously awarded grant aid as a result of this award, unless required by federal or state law.
